Spiritual Gifts – the Art of Giving From the Heart
The holidays are over, the new year is upon us, and not too many of us are thinking about gifts. But there is one type of gift that can be given, year ‘round – spiritual gifts. Many people talk about spiritual gifts in terms of religion, but one can give in the spirit of their faith or simply out of a desire to do something good in the name of Love.
Pay it forward and random acts of kindness are the sort of gifts that are such an incredible pleasure to give and receive… and it raises your vibration every time you give from the heart, for no reason other than because it feels good! What’s really beautiful is that you raise the receiver’s vibration too, just by putting a smile on their face and bringing them happiness.
Simple gifts are often the most meaningful. Long after the world’s coolest gadget is replaced by the latest version, and last-minute “I had no idea what to get you but I hope this will do” gifts have been forgotten, the well thought-out gifts from the heart remain a fond memory, a memory that says someone really cares. The little box of chamomile tea packets because you’ve been stressed at work… A well-worn, much-loved book with just the right message you need right now… Having your toll paid by the person in front of you or a cup of coffee from a stranger on a freezing January day…
Spiritual giving has nothing to do with money. There are thousands, even millions of ways to give without spending a single penny: The gift of babysitting services so you and your honey can have a night out. Mowing someone’s lawn or shoveling their walk. A smile, a hug and an empathetic ear… a phone call right when you think about someone… a compliment, a caring question, a card to a long-lost friend… your knowledge, skills, appreciation and your time… something you make, something you bake, something you created out of found objects, a herb seedling, a bloom from your garden…
It’s the little unexpected treasures that make life so wonderful, both for the giver and the receiver. They’re called spiritual gifts because they come from the spirit, and they are more beautiful and meaningful than any expensive, must-have, can’t-live-without-it-because-everyone-else-has-it thing. They need no occasion or holiday. They’re everyday gifts meant to uplift. And each of us has the capacity to give like this. Freely, with no expectation of reciprocity. Just ’cause.
One of the most meaningful, precious gifts is the gift of time and attention. Everyone loves to feel wanted. Appreciated. Important and valued. Too many people spend their lives in lonely misery, wishing someone would give them the time of day. Why not you?
If you’ve ever been on the receiving end of a spiritual gift, you know how special it was. You know how good it feels to do something sweet for someone, just ‘cause.
It is said that if you want something, you must give it. Of course Love is at the top of the list of things we all want. So give Love, freely, spontaneously, joyfully. Show your love by caring. Spread your Love with spiritual gifts.
“The fact that I can plant a seed and it becomes a flower, share a bit of knowledge and it becomes another’s, smile at someone and receive a smile in return, are to me continual spiritual exercises.” – Leo Buscaglia
This beautiful quote is the essence of spiritual giving. What can you do for someone today? How can you, in your own way, make the world just a little better today?
You can make spiritual giving a part of your daily routine. Sometimes it’s easy to be spontaneous about it, and other times, you can plan. In fact, I encourage you to make spiritual giving a daily habit. There’s no reason you can’t give three things every single day no matter how crazy busy your day is or how frazzled you are: compliments, smiles and an empathetic ear. Those are gifts that require no planning, driving, shopping or money.
I mentioned before how your vibration will increase every time you give a spiritual gift. It’s as simple as the marvelous good feeling you get when you give!
You will be absolutely amazed at how good you feel when you share your spiritual gifts with the world. Seriously, doing wonderful, surprising things for people will make you deep-down, profoundly happy! It’s a delightful little practice that will change your life.
